The global lithium battery recycling market was estimated at USD 165.3 million in 2019 and is expected to grow to USD 18.1 billion by 2030. The Asia Pacific region (APAC) holds the largest share in the lithium battery recycling market, currently accounting for about 70%, and is expected to grow at an overall rate of about 18.3% by 2030. There are many recycling companies in countries such as China, Vietnam, India, Philippines and Korea. Due to the popularization and explosive growth of electric vehicles, 500,000 tons of waste lithium batteries will be generated in mainland China alone by 2020, and 2 million tons of waste lithium batteries will be generated globally every year by 2030. In 2018, about 97,000 tons of batteries were recycled globally, while China recycled nearly 67,000 tons of waste lithium batteries in 2018, accounting for 69% of the global market, followed by South Korea with about 18,000 tons. Currently, the recycling rate in the EU and the US is less than 5%. Although recycling companies in the European Union and the United States have perfect treatment processes, it is difficult to achieve profit targets, or they lack recycling channels and desalination with high economic benefits.
